When the circa-$300K, 480kW BMW XM hyper-SUV broke cover last month as the first dedicated BMW M model since the 1978 M1 – and what’s likely to be the German car-maker’s swansong V8 hybrid gas-guzzler – we didn’t think it could be topped.
But that was before the BMW XM ute busted out...
This unofficial creation by X-Tomi Design shows what a tyre-shredding BMW XM-based pick-up could look like… and it’s intriguing to say the least.
Big, blocky and about as subtle as using a sledgehammer to nail an M division calendar to your shed wall, the single-cab luxury super-ute design does nothing to improve the BMW XM’s controversial ‘face’… which was broadly lambasted by readers on our social channels.
But let’s be honest… utes don’t have to be pretty. They just need to be practical and this Bavarian bruiser appears to have a reasonably large tray.
We can only assume the BMW XM ute would be powered by the same twin-motor petrol-electric hybrid powerplant as the XM SUV, which combines the same 4.4-litre twin-turbo (S68) V8 from the BMW M5 Competition with an electric motor.
All told, the BMW XM pick-up truck should be good for an HSV Maloo GTSR W1-topping 480kW of power and 850Nm of torque – enough mumbo for a rapid 4.3sec 0-100km/h sprint time.
If that’s not enough power, the all-wheel drive German juggernaut is also available as the BMW XM Label Red, which hikes outputs to a tyre-shredding 550kW/1000Nm.
