Hyundai adds ix35 SE diesel
New SE AWD variant lowers diesel entry price for Hyundai's top-selling ix35 to $34,990Hyundai has announced a SE AWD diesel version of its ix35, lowering the diesel entry price for its top-selling compact SUV by $2600 to $34,990 (plus on-road costs).
Previously, the cheapest diesel-powered ix35 was the Elite AWD auto priced at $37,590 (the same price as the range-topping petrol model, the 2.4 Highlander AWD auto).
The European-sourced ix35 SE AWD diesel auto joins the SE 2WD petrol auto ($29,990) as the second SE-badged ix35, and brings to eight the number of variants in the popular ix35 line-up.
Its sub-$35,000 pricetag undercuts all of its most direct diesel rivals, including 103TDI AWD manual versions of the Skoda Yeti ($35,690) and Volkswagen Tiguan ($35,990) – both of which employ a 103kW 2.0-litre turbo-diesel.
Hyundai’s newest ix35 SE (for Special Edition) is also cheaper than other diesel-auto AWD SUVs like the Kia Sportage (from $35,990), Nissan X-TRAIL (from $36,190), Subaru Forester (from $36,490) Ford’s upcoming Kuga (from $39,240) and the Mazda CX-5 (from $39,470).
Powered by the same 135kW/392Nm 2.0-litre R-series CRDi turbo-diesel engine already available in the Elite and Highlander AWDs, the ix35 SE CRDi returns combined fuel consumption of 7.5L/100km.
Like Hyundai’s existing SE models, the new ix35 diesel variant features a unique front bumper with in-set foglights, automatic projector headlights, power-folding side mirrors, 17-inch alloy wheels and rear privacy glass.
Inside, there is a cooled glovebox, front and rear seat heating, leather/leatherette trim for the seats, steering wheel and gearshifter, a five-inch touch-screen and AM/FM/MP3/WMA/CD player with Bluetooth audio streaming, USB/AUX audio input and six speakers.
The ix35 SE achieves a maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating and comes standard with a reversing camera that displays images on the electro-chromatic rear-view mirror, plus six airbags, electronic stability and traction control, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, downhill brake control and hill start assist.
So far this year, the ix35 has outsold all other compact SUVs in Australia – including Nissan’s evergreen Dualis, which will become available with diesel power in late April – although the mid-size CX-5 remains the nation’s most popular SUV.
