Already something of a star in markets outside Korea -- particularly in the USA -- Hyundai's rear-drive Genesis coupe is in line for a mild facelift for the 2012 model year.
These Carparazzi photos don't show a lot of detail but if you look closely you'll see signs that the update will affect the grille/headlight area, and most likely the lower air intake that is usually the most easily-changed aspect of any front end. Pay no attention to the fake cladding on the front quarter panels.
Similar changes are also apparent at the back end with new tail light lenses and, most likely, a re-shaped rear bumper.
Most interesting is the likelihood of Hyundai slotting its new version of the Tau V8 -- that lifts capacity from 4.6-litres to 5.0-litres -- into both Genesis coupe and sedan. The naturally aspirated engine is expected to increase output from 287kW to a stunning 320kW and to be mated with a new Hyundai-developed eight-speed auto transmission.
It is being reported the athletic new V8, in combination with the eight-speed auto, will offer fuel savings of around two per cent over the current 4.6-litre six-speed version.
Currently the Genesis coupe is offered with either a 160kW Theta turbo four-cylinder or Hyundai's 228kW 3.8-litre Lambda V6. The Genesis sedan is offered with the choice of two Lambda V6 engines -- a 197kW 3.3-litre, or the 228kW 3.8-litre version seen in the coupe -- in addition to the 4.6-litre V8.
Similarly to the coupe, the Genesis sedan is also in line for a 2012 makeover.
And the prospects for Genesis in Australia?
Although Hyundai in Australia has been on-again off-again in voicing the likelihood of Genesis being sold locally, it seems highly improbable that would happen before the next-generation models hit the scene, not expected to arrive before 2014. Currently both coupe and sedan are built in left hand drive form only.
