Hyundai i30 N hatch orders to close

Soaring demand and limited supply of lauded hot hatch pushes wait times past 12 months

UPDATED 01/02/2023 5:30pm: Hyundai Australia has officially stopped taking orders for the 2023 Hyundai i30 N hatch to “avoid customer disappointment”.

As reported below, waiting times for the Czech-sourced hot hatch have blown out beyond 12 months in a similar situation to that of the smaller Hyundai i20 N.

“As soon as our i30 N production allocation catches up with the order bank, HMCA will start taking orders once again,” a Hyundai Australia spokesperson told carsales.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE PUBLISHED 19/01/2023: New Hyundai i30 N hatch orders are on the cusp of being paused as wait times for the lauded hot hatch blow out beyond 12 months.

Wait times for the facelifted model have been hovering between six and 12 months for the best part of a year now, but the local division this week confirmed new orders would take more than a year to deliver and could ultimately be halted in a similar fashion to the smaller Hyundai i20 N.

“We had to put i20 N on pause because our order bank matched our production level,” Hyundai Australia corporate communications general manager Bill Thomas told carsales.

“That meant we couldn’t take more orders, unfortunately. We are now close to the same situation with i30 N.”

Hyundai i30 N

The same cannot be said about the related Hyundai Kona N or newer Hyundai i30 sedan N, both of which are in stock nationally and have lead times of less than three months for new orders.

Save for the obvious number of orders, the biggest supply issue between the different N models is the location they’re built.

The i30 N hatch for instance is sourced from the Czech Republic whereas the Kona N and i30 sedan N are both produced in Korea, meaning drastically reduced shipping times (and costs).

Hyundai Kona N

The i20 N, meanwhile, is produced in Turkey and still has more than a 12-month wait on existing orders according to the latest dealer bulletin seen by carsales.

This extreme demand and the limited supply of both performance hatches has seen dealer demo, used and private sale prices skyrocket on carsales, with mark-ups of close to 50 per cent depending on the variant.

It's not just the beloved N cars in short supply though; it’s also the garden variety Hyundai i30, Hyundai Kona (EV included) and Hyundai Santa Fe line-ups, all of which could take up to 12 months to arrive depending on the specification.

Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid

The one outlier within those ranges is the recently launched Santa Fe Hybrid, which carsales understands to be in consistent supply after bottlenecks pushed its local launch back by eight months.

“Santa Fe Hybrid is looking good currently, which is really encouraging given Santa Fe supply generally has been restricted for a long time,” Thomas said.

“Tucson diesel is in plentiful supply and Palisade stock is healthy, as is stock for i30 sedan N.”

Hyundai i30 Sedan N

Other models either in stock or with short wait times include the i30 hatch, i30 sedan, Sonata, Venue, Staria and Staria Load, however, certain powertrains are in better supply than others.

But while this intel is undoubtedly a silver lining for some, Thomas lamented overall stock levels are lower than Hyundai would like and that Hyundai is struggling to meet consumer demand.

“If buyers are prepared to be flexible with colour and specification choice – and perhaps even model choice, for example choosing an i30 N sedan over a hatch – this flexibility could get them a car more promptly,” he said.

Later this year the Korean brand will launch the new-generation Hyundai Kona, Hyundai IONIQ 6 EV and a facelifted i30 sedan line-up, the latter of which will include a new N flagship.
