Hyundai IONIQ 5 orders open again Thursday

Second batch of award-winning EVs to go on sale in selected states this week

Hyundai Australia has confirmed its second allocation of Hyundai IONIQ 5 electric crossovers will go on sale to customers in Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth this week.

Prospective buyers who had registered their interest for the

via Hyundai Australia’s website were sent an email notification earlier this month alerting them to the second phase of Hyundai’s Australian rollout strategy.

It follows the first release of about 100 vehicles to buyers in New South Wales and the ACT in mid-December, plus the initial allocation of 240 vehicles made available to all Aussie customers in October – which sold out in two hours and have since been delivered.

A Hyundai Australia spokesperson confirmed to carsales the second batch of vehicles would go on sale at midday (AEST) this Thursday (January 27). The spokesperson declined to say how many vehicles were included.

All vehicles bound for Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth are expected to be delivered in the same timeframe as NSW and ACT vehicles, the official said – roughly six months’ time.

“This process has been designed so we don’t overload the system,” the spokesperson explained.

“We did NSW and the ACT in December, but it doesn’t mean that because they ordered first they get stock first. Stock is already allocated to regions. We’re just spacing out when we do our online ordering process.

“We can’t confirm the quantity at this stage, but it was around 100 cars for the NSW-ACT batch.”

Mirroring the first phase of Hyundai’s rollout, all ordering for phase two is done online with five dealerships handling the deliveries across the Melbourne, Queensland and Perth. All of them are in capital cities except for a dealer on the Gold Coast.

Successful buyers are given a choice of two IONIQ 5 variants: a rear-wheel drive model for $71,900 before on-road costs, or an all-wheel drive model for $75,900 plus ORCs.

The email sent out last week is believed to have landed in the inboxes of some 15,000 people who had registered their interest with Hyundai.

“The second online exclusive release of the all-new IONIQ 5 will be brought to you by Hyundai Australia at 12pm AEST,” Hyundai’s email to prospective customers reads, translating to 1:00pm Melbourne (AEDT) time and 10:00am Perth (AWST) time.

“The global award-winning sell-out continues to rival unprecedented demand so we expect delivery times for the second release of IONIQ 5 could take six months or more.

“With that being said, we know you are eager to own this incredible all-electric SUV and appreciate this vehicle buying experience is unparalleled.”

Given the timing of previous rollouts, Hyundai Australia is set to open a third wave of orders to buyers in South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory in February.
