Expect ix-onic concept shown at Geneva likely to go to market as ix35
Meet ix-onic, the likely replacement for Hyundai's Tucson, or at least the likely bearer of many a styling cue. Hailing from the Korean giant's German design studio and unveiled at the Geneva show last week, the compact SUV showcases the next generation of technology Hyundai's been working on in its quest for leadership in cleanliness and greenliness.
Its all-new petrol engine extracts a respectable 125kW out of a modest 1.6 litres thanks to direct injection and turbocharging, and transmits it to the road through a high-efficiency dual-clutch six-speed gearbox.
Hyundai is explicitly aiming at cleanest-in-class, with CO2 emissions of 149g/km and an idle stop-go feature.
The car will go to market in FWD and AWD iterations in 2010. Release schedules have not yet been announced; neither have prices, but any massive variation from the Tucson price range - currently mid-$20Ks to early-$30K - would be a surprise.
