Hyundai has posted more growth in patent filing than any other car manufacturer, a report has shown. The report by Thomson Reuters IP & Science shows that although the Korean giant still trails industry leader Toyota in the number of filings, it posted the biggest gains.
The analysis of global patent applications entitled The State of Innovation in the Automotive Industry 2015 looked at the past five years and analysed patent applications in five key areas: propulsion, navigation, handling, safety and security, and entertainment.
Hyundai was well placed in every category although overall it ranked third. Toyota was ranked number one ahead of electronic components giant and pioneer of systems including stability control and antilock brakes, Robert Bosch GmbH.
As reported in US industry outlet Automotive News, the Thomson Reuters survey said Hyundai's patent filings more than doubled to 1200 in 2013, from 500 in 2010
The only US company to make it into the patent top ten was General Motors.
Autonomous cars and the systems associated with them are driving much of the innovation, Thomson Reuters asserted. The number of automotive-sector patent filings around the world has grown by double-digits year-on-year over the past five years, the report said.
