Hyundai N cars set for ultra-lightweight carbon-fibre wheels

Carbon rims claimed to be up to 50 per cent lighter than current alloys used on Hyundai N models

Wheel specialist Dymag and composites firm Hankuk Carbon have joined forces to supply advanced carbon-fibre wheel technology for future Hyundai N Performance models.

A prototype new 21-inch carbon-fibre ‘hybrid’ wheel was unveiled on the 2024 Hyundai IONIQ 5 N at the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed, which is believed to preview the production version.

No details have been released on the IONIQ 5 N’s wheels, but they are said to combine an outer carbon-fibre rim with a machined forged metallic centrepiece that in other applications sees a weight saving over a cast alloy wheel of between 40-50 per cent.

As well as being lighter, the new tech also manages to reduce rolling inertia while offering improved stiffness, strength and durability compared to a traditional wheel.

The hybrid mix of composite and metallic elements is also said to have the ability to spring back in the event of a high load or sharp impact, which could deform or shatter alloy or full-carbon wheels.

What’s more, the new Dymag and Hankuk tech is also claimed to reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), improving refinement over noisy road surfaces.

Dymag already offers its hybrid carbon rims in 18-23-inch sizes, but will soon launch 24-inch and enormous 25-inch wheels to its range.

There’s no word when Hyundai N will introduce its new ultra-lightweight wheels, nor on what model.

Dymag and Hankuk say they’re at an advanced stage to share their carbon-fibre-hybrid wheel tech with “multiple OEMs”, with new supply agreements expected to be announced shortly.
