Hyundai rolls out next-gen superfast chargers in Korea

F1-style stations capable of adding 100km of range every five minutes

Hyundai has begun rolling out its next-generation E-Pit charging stations across South Korea that are modelled on an F1 pit stop.

Developed to work with the car-maker's latest 800-volt battery charging capability, replenishment from flat to 80 per cent is claimed to take no more than 18 minutes.

Perhaps more remarkable, 800-volt vehicles can have 100km of range added every five minutes.

Hyundai says it will open 12 E-Pit stations, each with six ultra-fast chargers, in Korea this month alone. A further eight stations will open later this year.

As well as the chargers, Hyundai now offers owners in Korea a digital payment service that allows users to pay using a new mobile app.

It's not known if Hyundai has any plans to roll out its E-Pit charger to other countries.

Currently, the only vehicles that are compatible with the ultra-fast chargers are the new IONIQ 5 and the latest Kia EV6, although new pure-electric Genesis models will also launch later this year.

Demand for ultra-fast chargers in Korea is claimed to be especially high since most typical EV owners live in city apartment blocks without home-charging facilities.
