Hyundai unveils new RM16 concept

Korean car-maker reveals third mid-engined Veloster N concept, this time pointing to production N models

Hyundai has revealed yet another mid-engined Veloster concept as it builds towards the launch of its high performance N sub-brand.

The new concept, called the RM16, follows on from both the RM15 and RM14 concepts that first introduced the idea of a faster version of the Veloster.

This time, pundits say the concept's 221kW 2.0-litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine could preview a future production engine.

Other production N parts seen on the RM16 that could head for future fast Hyundais include a six-speed manual and an electronically-controlled limited slip-differential, plus an electric supercharger.

The mid-engined Veloster concept is said to come with aerodynamic aids that are claimed to provide rear downforce at speed -- including an active rear spoiler that could star on future N models.

Real working aerodynamics, rather than fake diffusers and ego-boosting spoilers, will be part of the performance package for all N models, including the i30 N that is rumoured to come with an extreme aero kit tailored specifically for the Nurburgring.

This suggests the Korean car-maker might attempt to set a record on the old German road circuit where Hyundai has one of its R&D bases.

The Nurburgring-tuned 2.0-litre turbo-petrol i30 N, meanwhile, has already been confirmed for production and should offer more than 200kW, have a top speed in excess of 250km/h and be on sale in Australia next year.
