The year is 2007, the place is Seoul. Hyundai unveils a concept car called the Veloster. An unusual name, but the design is appealing and rumours begin spreading that the front-wheel drive prototype is an early look at the Tiburon's replacement.
Fast forward to the year 2010 and Carparazzi's photographers snap a funky-looking Hyundai festooned with camouflage and undergoing testing. Could this be the production version of the Veloster? It's increasingly likely.
Hyundai has previously stated that the Veloster will be shipped to dealers in 2011 and the company's North American CEO, John Krafcik, was quoted at the launch of a recent Hyundai model (iX35) comparing the new Veloster to the Honda CRX. It's a car that owners can "take out and wring its neck and still get good mileage. Fun and economical, with a great power-to-weight ratio," said Krafcik.
The CRX parallel can be seen in the design too, with the sloping rear end and hunkered down profile. The new model could also be compared to the Volkswagen Scirocco, a two-door sports hatch that isn't offered in Australia. We're also hoping that Hyundai has an option pack complete with roof-mounted orange emergency lights...
Power for the upcoming model is likely to come from Hyundai's Theta II GDI engine with a capacity smaller than the i45's (aka Sonata) 2.4-litre 150kW unit. As the name suggestst these GDI engines feature direct injection, and the Veloster is likely to produce around 125kW.
