Infiniti G37 two-door priced from $75,900

Infiniti's luxury coupe and convertible arrives in Oz ready to take on the Germans

Infiniti has announced Australian pricing and equipment for both its G37 Coupe and G37 Convertible.

The four-seat range begins at $75,900 for the hard-top G37 GT Premium. It is offered as standard with leather upholstery, 18-inch alloy wheels, glass sunroof, foglights, LED tail-lights, rear-view camera, adaptive bi-Xenon headlights, dual-zone climate-control, power-adjustable and heated front seats, remote keyless entry and an 11-speaker Bose audio system boasting Bluetooth connectivity, satellite-navigation, 10GB hard-disc drive and seven-inch colour touchscreen.

The range is topped by the $87,900 G37 Convertible S Premium which adds bigger brakes, 19-inch wheels with tyre pressure monitoring and a 13-speaker Bose Open Air sound system. While the $83,500 G37 Coupe S Premium receives sports suspension, four-wheel steering, a limited-slip differential, sports seats and a rear lip spoiler.

Both two-door G variants will be powered by Infiniti's 3.7-litre V6 petrol engine. The unit develops 235kW/360Nm driving the rear wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission. There is no manual transmission available.

G37 Coupe and Convertible models ride on a double wishbone (front) / multi-link (rear) suspension arrangement and ride on lightweight 18- or 19-inch alloy wheels, depending on specification.

Electrically-assisted variable ratio steering is standard on both body types, with the G37 high-grade Coupe offered optionally with Infiniti's four-wheel active-steer system (4WAS). Braking is managed by aluminium four-piston calipers grabbing 14.0-inch discs at the front and two-piston units on 13.8-inch rotors at the rear.

The competitor to BMW's 3 Series ilk is set to arrive in local dealerships from next month, joining the recently-released FX SUV and M sedan.

The G37 will go head-to-head with the likes of BMW's 320d Coupe, which starts at $69,500. BMW's cheapest petrol-powered 3 Series offering, the comparably spec'ed 325i, is listed at $83,815, while the Bavarian brand's 3 Series Convertible competitor starts at $82,500.

Lexus' lone coupe/cabriolet offering, the IS 250 C, is priced at $76,300. While the Audi A5 Coupe range is listed from $66,900 to $95,900 (MRLP) and Cabriolet range from $78,500 to $108,800.

The entire hoard of mid-size prestige models are undercut by the three-pointed star brand with Mercedes-Benz's C-Class Coupe beginning at just $58,900.

Mindful of Infiniti's competition, brand general manager Kevin Snell said the G37 would provide Australian buyers with more choice in the important premium segment.

"The Infiniti G37 Coupe and Convertible represent Infiniti's next important step in Australia," said Mr Snell.

"These two cars open Infiniti to another vital segment within the Australian luxury car market and expand the scope of our ability to offer luxury car buyers a long-awaited new choice.

"These two exciting sports cars embody Infiniti's performance luxury credentials by packaging dynamic handling with technology, comfort and quality in an athletic yet elegant design. These are luxury cars for drivers."

Noting a strong standard equipment list, Mr Snell said the Infiniti brand worked hard to make the local product competitive. The G37 is fitted as standard with many of the features other manufacturers offer as cost options.

"These are very heavily equipped cars," said Mr Snell of the G37 range. "We put all the equipment in the customers in this category expect. We do not have a long list of options people have to pay extra for. We deliver a performance/value equation we believe is the best in this segment."

It's a fact that has seen a diverse array of prestige marques traded on the 76 Infiniti models sold to date.

"There's no one specific brand, it's quite diverse," said Mr Snell. "The interesting thing for us is that probably a richer mix of luxury makes than what we anticipated with a variety thereof. We've seen BMW, we've seen Lexus, one or two Cayenne, as well as HSV, Audi and Mercedes-Benz."

Mr Snell said another factor driving early sales was availability. The Japanese-based company was able to supply and ship cars a lot quicker than its European counterparts, with the maximum waiting time quoted at three months.

"I think one of the advantages versus the European brands for example is if it is a unique order, or if it isn't a standard specification that we have in stock, our turnaround is about 10 to 12 weeks given we come out of Japan," surmised Mr Snell.

Infiniti currently has had a Sydney-based showroom with Brisbane joining ranks this month (December 2012) and Melbourne in February 2013. Perth and Adelaide dealerships are expected to follow shortly thereafter. The luxury brand has so far launched four models.
