Isuzu D-MAX and MU-X recalled over steering issue

More than 15,000 Isuzu vehicles have been recalled due to a potentially defective steering component

Isuzu Ute Australia (IUA) is recalling a total of 15,542 Isuzu D-MAX utes and MU-X off-road SUVs due to the potential for a steering shaft attaching bolt to dislodge.

“Due to a manufacturing issue, the lower steering shaft attaching bolt may have a torque value lower than the required specification. Over time the lower steering shaft attaching bolt may lose tension causing it to dislodge,” said IUA in the product safety recall notice issued by the ACCC today.

“If the steering shaft bolt dislodges whilst operating the vehicle, it will cause a loss of steering.”

In a worst-case scenario, IUA says the loss of steering may “increase the risk of an accident causing serious injury or death to the driver, occupants and other road users”.

An IUA spokesperson told carsales there have been no instances of this happening in Australia and the recall is entirely precautionary.

Isuzu D-MAX

About three-quarters of the 15,000-plus vehicles involved in the recall are MU-X wagons, with D-MAX utes accounting for the rest – including all variants of both models produced between 2020 and 2022.

For a full list of affected vehicles you can download this spreadsheet from the federal government’s Product Safety Australia website.

Affected owners will be advised in writing to contact an authorised Isuzu Ute dealership to organise an appointment to have their vehicle’s lower steering shaft fixed if necessary – a process that takes around an hour.
