Isuzu UTE Australia has released a special-edition version of the popular Isuzu MU-X, which is likely to be the final update to the seven-seat off-road SUV before it’s replaced by an all-new model next year.
Hinting at an upmarket push for the new-generation Isuzu MU-X based on the redesigned Isuzu D-MAX ute, the Isuzu MU-X Onyx edition sports an upmarket look and feel thanks to a more athletic front-end design and numerous blacked-out styling cues.
It should be a popular model given its price tag of $56,990 drive-away – just $590 more than the list price of the range-topping Isuzu MU-X LS-T ($56,400 plus on-road costs) on which it’s based.
Apart from being limited to 420 units, the Isuzu MU-X Onyx edition also brings a premium interior fit-out headlined by quilted leather-accented trim and a six-way power-operated driver’s seat, plus additional features including automatic headlights, body-coloured wing mirrors, wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, digital radio and sat-nav.
On the outside, the Onyx gets a shadow chrome grille and rear-end treatment, plus a new chin spoiler and gloss black side-steps to create a dark look. The larger seven-seat SUV is offered in two colours to maximise its dark demeanour – Obsidian Grey mica or Silky White pearl.
The Isuzu MU-X Onyx edition gets the usual spread of equipment from its LS-T donor vehicle, such as keyless entry/start, a 6.8-inch touch-screen infotainment system, roof-mounted 10-inch DVD screen and rear-seat entertainment system, eight-speaker audio, air-conditioning vents for all rows plus loads of ancillary ports.
We’re talking three 12-volt outlets, including one in the rear for fridges and the like, plus a trio of five-volt USB ports, including two fast-charging 2.1 amp sockets and one regular 1.0A socket.
The Isuzu MU-X Onyx edition continues to be powered by a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine offering 130kW/430Nm – enough gristle to deliver a 3000kg towing capacity.
Power is sent to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission with dual-range 4x4 Terrain Command system. With 230mm of ground clearance and underpinnings from the (previous-gen) Isuzu D-MAX, the MU-X is a genuine 4x4 off-roader.
Like all Isuzu M-UXs, the Onyx is covered by a six-year, 150,000km factory warranty, up to seven years of roadside assistance and a seven-year capped price servicing program.
Despite being released in late 2013 and about to be replaced by a new-generation model, details of which were recently leaked via the Japanese patent office, the current Isuzu M-UX is still a strong-selling model.
It has outsold every other large SUV in its segment except two Toyotas – Prado and Kluger – with 5020 sales so far this year giving it an eight percent market share, outdoing the likes of the Ford Everest and Mazda CX-9.
