Heavy investment in Jaguar Land Rover's Castle Bromwich plant will lead to the launch of three all-new pure-electric vehicles before the end of 2021.
According to sources speaking to
, the struggling car-maker is scrambling to launch three battery-powered vehicles before the end of next year following an incredible £1 billion ($A2bn) investment in its Birmingham factory.The resulting Jaguar XJ, J-PACE and flagship Road Rover will all be built on JLR's Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) that has been designed and engineered for pure-electric power.
According to the insiders, the XJ and Road Rover will be pure-electric only, suggesting the Jaguar J-PACE may also be available with petrol or diesel power for some markets.
The MLA also allows the car-maker to offer plug-in hybrid, hybrid and conventional internal combustions engines and will underpin both the full-size Range Rover and the Range Rover Sport, plus the Discovery 6.
First to launch, will be the Jaguar XJ that's due to roll off the refreshed Castle Bromwich line in early Q2 of 2021.
The Road Rover, will be renamed for production, and is due to arrive around the same time as the J-PACE.
Despite sitting above the breakthrough I-PACE, the next plug-in Jag will not be an evolution of that car's looks, says the Brit mag, with the J-PACE set to have more avant-garde styling and an overt luxury bent.
Interestingly, JLR sources says the F-TYPE will live on when the current car is eventually pensioned off in a few years' time and the sporty coupe and roadster could migrate to a new bespoke platform, although expect both cars to be radically reinterpreted, possibly, into a four-door coupe.
The fate of both the XE and XF, meanwhile, is less certain following disappointing global sales, insiders says JLR bosses are plotting replacing the two sedans and XF wagon with an SUV.
Before that, both cars could be culled early if a new manufacturing hub for them is not found since both are currently made at the Castle Bromwich plant that is being converted to all-EV prediction.
