Jeep Avenger toughens up with 4xe hybrid model

Jeep’s small SUV gets more rugged and capable with new 4x4 hybrid powertrain

The 2024 Jeep Avenger 4xe has been shown for the first time, revealing what’s claimed to be the most capable version of the US brand’s latest small SUV.

Originally launched as an EV last year before a cheaper petrol-fed variant was also introduced, the Jeep Avenger has been strictly a front-wheel drive proposition – but that changes with the arrival of the new 4xe hybrid.

Previewed by the Jeep Avenger 4x4 Concept at the 2022 Paris motor show, the series-production 4xe combines a 100kW petrol engine/six-speed dual-clutch transmission with two 21kW electric motors that drive the rear wheels, providing all-wheel drive as well as pure-electric capability.

Instead of focusing on efficiency, it looks like the incoming Avenger 4xe will major in off-road ability with its wider track, off-road tyres, raised ride height and visual changes including lime green tow hooks.

Jeep says that torque of 190Nm can be provided at the rear wheels, while ‘power looping’ technology can guarantee traction of the AWD system regardless of the battery’s state of charge.

On sale before the end of 2024, pricing will be released later and a decision announced on whether it will be imported to Australia, although the availability of right-hand drive for the UK market should help the business case here.

“The new Jeep Avenger 4xe represents a turning point for the brand,” said Jeep’s European boss Eric Laforge.

“The latest version of our successful model brings together the compactness and versatility of Avenger with the performance of the all-wheel drive system.

“The result is an unparalleled capability for a more dynamic driving experience. The new Avenger 4xe is completing the brand’s offering of 4x4 SUV in all segments.”
