The specs aren’t quite clear: does the 5.2-metre length of the Jetour G700 include the spare tyre slung on the tailgate of the plug-in hybrid SUV? However you cut it, the large, economy-sized off-road wagon from Chery-owned Jetour is right in the same ballpark as Toyota’s LandCruiser 300 Series. Whether the G700 can match the Toyota for off-road ability remains to be seen, although video seen by carsales augurs well for the Chinese challenger – but the G700 far exceeds the LandCruiser for luxury appointments and a five-star glamping experience.

How much does the Jetour G700 cost?

Jetour officials wouldn’t hazard a guess at what the G700 will sell for in Australia 12 months from now, and that reluctance is entirely understandable. There’s this war in the Middle East, see? And it’s having a massive effect on inflation, but differently for different nations. Forecasting how the G700 will be priced when the future for geopolitics and foreign trade is so uncertain is a fool’s errand.

But let’s consider the G700 based on what we know in the present. It’s a high-spec vehicle, without a doubt, and its sheer size, its safety and luxury features, balanced against its production base (China) being a low labour-cost nation, would suggest it would still retail for a price above $80,000.

Bear in mind the Luxury Car Tax, with its green-car dispensation, may be rescinded by the time the G700 arrives in Australia, thanks to the free trade agreement with Europe – yet another reason the Jetour execs didn’t want to be pinned down to a specific price or price bracket so far out from launch.

Even in a worst-case scenario – annual inflation above 10 per cent and the LCT remaining in place – one would imagine Jetour Australia would hope to bring in the G700 at a price below $100,000. That is completely our guess, so don’t blame Jetour if the G700 launches at a starting price of $270,000 in April 2028!

However much it costs, the G700 will present great value for the right sort of buyer. It won’t be short of goodies, starting with the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol-electric plug-in hybrid powertrain, which features electric motors driving all four wheels and three diff locks.

The petrol engine is an undersquare design – longer stroke, narrower bore – producing 155kW and 340Nm.

Output for the front electric motor is 210kW/360Nm, versus 300kW/435Nm for the rear. All up, the combined output from the two amounts to 665kW/1135Nm.

The G700 is sold in three trim levels, and the variants seen and driven by carsales appeared to be the flagship, riding on 20-inch alloy wheels with seating for six in a 2-2-2 configuration.

What’s good about the Jetour G700?

Inside, the 2026 Jetour G700 is very nicely presented, albeit with some style flourishes that were clearly inspired by Land Rover. One design feature that is unique to Jetour is the embossed ‘contour map’ affectation in the dash, door grips and centre console storage bin.

Instrumentation stretches right across the dash, with a large landscape-format screen in the centre for infotainment. The centre console ‘floats’, with an open storage bin underneath the drive selector, the associated switchgear and two cupholders. A blue LED strip delineates the upper plane of the centre console from the open bin, which houses a USB-A port for the driver.

A deep storage bin with a removable shelf and a 12V auxiliary power outlet sits underneath the armrest in the centre, aft of the cupholders. The front passenger seat folds flat and well forward, allowing an ‘Ottoman’ function for the passenger in the second-row seat behind. Each of the second-row seats has its own USB-C port.

Leaving aside the G700’s obvious virtues inside, it’s pretty quick in a straight line, and it has effortless performance to tackle steep grades. With a 4.6-second 0-100km/h time, it will humiliate a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT, and the G700’s ride is cushy but well controlled.

The three diff locks optimise traction as long as the tyres bite into solid ground. At 970mm, the wading depth of the Jetour G700 is definitely competitive, and there’s an aquatic propulsion system that can be ordered as an option in China. Maybe we’ll see it in Australia as well?

Unfortunately, there was no opportunity to put the G700 through its paces in a familiar testing environment, so a better appraisal will have to await local testing.

What’s not so good about the Jetour G700?

There’s really only one significant criticism of the G700, and that is its on-road dynamics. It rolls a bit when the driver changes direction suddenly, and it just can’t match a Range Rover Sport for handling and steering.

But it is a heavy-duty off-road SUV. It’s built on a full chassis. There is no specific requirement from consumers for the G700 to deliver the same on-road experience as the Range Rover Sport – not if their primary purchasing criterion is off-road ability or comfort. And ultimately, the G700’s passive dynamics are safe.

Should I buy a Jetour G700?

There will likely come a point in time when people ask themselves, “How did we ever manage to go off-roading in the days before plug-in hybrid drive systems?"

The 2026 Jetour G700 is on the crest of that wave. That it looks good too, feels properly built and antes up a plethora of bells and whistles at what will hopefully be a competitive price, is all the more reason the G700 should be on the consideration list for buyers who are open-minded.

Pros
  • Looks great, inside and out, with plenty of ‘surprise and delight’ features to attract buyers
  • Quiet, comfortable, eco-friendly and competent off-road
  • Won’t be cheap, but will represent good value when it arrives in Australia
Cons
  • Skews away from on-road dynamism in favour of off-road mud-plugging and bush bashing
  • A vehicle this big should be a seven-seater, not a six-seater
  • Some design traits have been inspired by designers at other companies
