KG Mobility Torres EVX detailed in full

A reborn SsangYong debuts its second electric SUV

KG Mobility (formerly known as SsangYong) has revealed key details and South Korean pricing for the new Torres EVX electric SUV, its second EV after the Korando e-Motion.

Headline specs include a circa-500km effective driving range courtesy of a lithium-ion phosphate battery, and a starting price of about ?48.5 million – the equivalent of $A55,666 – in its native market.

That starting figure is before the myriad Korean EV incentives are factored in, which KG Mobility says should lower the opening price to about ?30 million ($A34,428).

Two trim levels will be offered in South Korea – E5 and E7 – but there’s only a single powertrain comprising a 73.4kWh battery pack and a 150kW electric motor, meaning the EVX won’t be able to venture as far off-road as its internal combustion sibling, especially with only 173mm of ground clearance.

But what the mid-size electric SUV lacks in capability will be offset by sheer performance given it carries a significant power advantage over the 126kW/280Nm petrol versions, and we’re sure the gap between the two will grow when it comes to torque – because an official figure for the EV hasn’t been announced.

This more urban-oriented focus is reflected in the Torres EVX’s styling, which is so different from the internal combustion variants it could almost be a standalone model.

Overall dimensions of 4715mm x 1890mm x 1725mm place the Torres EVX at the larger end of the mid-size SUV segment, as does the resulting 839 litres of total cargo room behind the second row.

Stow the rear seats and that volume doubles to a big 1662L.

“The Torres EVX, which inherited the DNA of Torres, is a mid-sized electric SUV that is spacious and has excellent space utilisation, making it easy for outdoor activities such as camping and car parking,” KB Mobility said.

Standard equipment for the entry-level E5 variant includes 18-inch alloys, LED exterior lighting, active aero shutters, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 12.3-inch infotainment system, dual-zone climate control, leatherette upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats with eight-way power adjustment for the driver, adaptive cruise control and express front windows.

Stepping up to the E7 adds bigger 20-inch alloys with wider and lower profile tyres, leather upholstery, heated rear seats, illuminated scuff plates and digital key compatibility.

We don’t know yet if the Torres EVX will be offered in Australia, but KG Mobility has spoken previously about offering the model in international markets including Europe.
