Kia Picanto hit by software fault

Almost 10,000 Kia Picanto city cars are the subject of a safety recall in Australia

Kia Australia has announced a nationwide recall for its pint-sized Kia Picanto hatch, with close to 10,000 cars potentially struck by a technical glitch that affects its ADR compliance.

The recall relates to 9763 examples of Kia’s smallest model sold in Australia, with those affected all built between 2020 and 2022.

In the safety notice, Kia says that “if the rear fog lamp is switched ON after the ignition has been switched OFF and the driver’s door opened, the audible warning will not sound”.

According to Kia, the rather innocent problem means affected Picanto models do not comply with Australian Design Rule (ADR) 13/00, which sets the standards for vehicle lighting and light signalling devices for passenger cars in Australia.

Until affected models have received a software update, the rear fog lights could possibly stay on even once the driver has left the vehicle, which may cause the battery to go flat if left for an extended period.

carsales has reached out to Kia Australia for further clarification.

The company says owners can contact their local Kia dealership to schedule an appointment to have the instrument cluster software updated free of charge.
