FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW: Kia upgrades Sorento, adds GT Line

Kia has released pictures of a facelifted Sorento seven-seat large SUV that goes on sale in Europe -- and in Australia -- around October this year.

The 2018 Sorento brings a lightly refreshed exterior, updated interior, new in-car tech and an eight-speed automatic transmission for the 2.2-litre diesel.

Following on from the recently revealed mid-life tweaks to the Sorento SUV sold in South Korea, the Euro-spec updates introduce a similar range of revisions that include redesigned front and rear bumpers, new LED headlight and tail-lights, a darker finish to the firm's 'tiger-nose' grille and the choice of new 17-, 18- or 19-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, there's a new steering wheel, dashboard instrument cluster and a larger 8.0-inch infotainment system that provides Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Tucked away in the centre console there's a wireless phone charger too.

As well as new tech, Kia claims the Sorento's interior now features more soft-touch materials and extra leather to raise the perception of cabin quality.

Under the bonnet, the big news is that the 2.2-litre turbo-diesel ditches its old six-speed auto for an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission that not only shifts quicker but improves acceleration and reduces fuel use.

The eight-speed tranny comes in four drive modes: Eco, Comfort, Sport and Smart. The driver mode for the gearbox also alters the weight of the steering wheel and sharpens up throttle response in Sport.

Smart mode, meanwhile, monitors the driver's behaviour and selects the most appropriate setting for their mood or driving conditions.

As part of the upgrades, Kia (for Europe at least) has introduced a GT Line to its SUV that adds four-lamp 'ice cube' LED fog lights brake callipers, side steps and chromed twin exhaust tips on the diesel.

Inside the GT Line there are quilted black leather seats with GT Line emblems, gear shift paddles and chrome highlights.

Originally, the updated Sorento was due to arrive by September this year. It's not known if Kia Australia plans to introduce the GT Line trim, but more news is expected following the updated Sorento's reveal at next week's Frankfurt motor show.
