Subaru has pulled the curtains back on the new-generation 2023 Subaru Impreza at the Los Angeles motor show, confirming that it has culled the sedan version but will bring back the hot 2.5 RS variant.
Sharing platform and mechanicals with the incoming third-generation Subaru Crosstrek small SUV (previously known as the XV), the new Impreza five-door hatch also shares styling cues with its more rugged brother, including its hexagonal grille, interlinked headlights and altogether more aggressive look than the outgoing model.
Beneath the skin, the Impreza remains based on the Subaru Global Platform (SGP), although the car-maker claims the underpinnings are now 10 per cent stiffer, enhancing safety and handling.
Like before, the sixth-gen Impreza boasts Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive system that combines with its flat four-cylinder ‘boxer’ engines.
At the LA show, Subaru announced that it planned to revive the sporty RS nameplate that sits below the WRX and STI models.
Last used in the US back in 2005 on the second-gen Impreza, the modern reboot will see the Subaru hatch return with a naturally-aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 136kW and 241Nm of torque.
Reflecting its sportier nature, the Impreza RS also gets sports suspension, bigger brakes, 18-inch alloy wheels and LED headlights.
Inside, there’s sport seats and a 10-speaker premium sound system.
A cheaper Sport model will also be offered that keeps the sports suspension and upgraded brakes but blends the RS extras with a more modest 113kW/197Nm 2.0-litre boxer engine.
The 2.0-litre looks to be a revised version of the current engine underpinning the Impreza range, while there’s no word yet on the availability of turbocharged or hybrid powertrains.
All versions of the new Impreza will be fitted standard with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).
Subaru says all models now feature a more direct steering rack sourced from the last-gen WRX that’s designed to improve steering feel and response.
Subaru’s latest EyeSight driver assist safety suite is included in the new Impreza, along with a clever climate control system that focuses on warming (or cooling) the occupied seats within the cabin, improving comfort and efficiency.
Like the new Crosstrek, the Impreza gets an 11.6-inch infotainment system that works with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
In the US, the 2023 Subaru Impreza is set to go on sale in the second quarter of next year.
Australian-market details are still to be confirmed, but a launch is expected during 2023.
