Lexus has finally lifted the lid on a seven-seat version of its family-size RX SUV, the release of which was officially confirmed two weeks ago and first revealed by motoring.com.au in 2014.
Due in Australian showrooms next February and based on the latest RX five-seat SUV launched in November 2015, the three-row RX L is 110mm longer in the rear and total length grows to 5000mm, despite no change to the 2790mm wheelbase.
The RX L will be offered with V6 petrol or hybrid drivelines, with Lexus revealing the 216kW RX 350L and 230kW RX 450hL all-wheel drive variants in LA overnight.
That echoes the five-seat RX range, but the turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine in the base RX 200t appears to be off the table.
Lexus says the longer RX model was developed to meet frequent requests from customers and dealers, and will incorporate a powered third-row seat with 60:40 split-fold functionality.

The range will include a powered tailgate and tri-zone climate control as standard (with third-row outlets), and promises “class-leading luggage space” behind the low-set third row of seats. Second-row head and legroom are unchanged, as is the middle row’s 40:20:40 split-fold function.
Like the five-seat RX range (priced between $74,250 and $108,610 plus on-road costs) the RX L will be highly specified, but it’s unclear how much of a price premium Lexus Australia will charge for the RX L.
It’s expected Australia will see many of the features previewed in the show cars, including 20-inch alloy wheels, an 8.0-inch infotainment array -- or optional 12.3-inch, 835-Watt, 15-speaker Mark Levinson premium audio system – leather upholstery and satellite-navigation.
Lexus Safety System+ is standard across the seven-seat range and includes a pre-collision safety system with pedestrian detection, all-speed active cruise control, lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic high-beam, blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert. Ten airbags are also standard.
The current Lexus RX range receives a five-star ANCAP safety rating.
Full pricing and specifications for the Australian market will be announced closer to the local launch of the RX L early next year.
