Lamborghini EV prototype teased ahead of reveal

Raging Bull brand’s first EV will be a 2+2 grand tourer that retains the familiar wedge shape of its supercar stablemates

Lamborghini has released a shadowy teaser of its upcoming EV prototype ahead of the groundbreaking vehicle’s public debut on August 19 during California’s Monterey Car Week, revealing a traditional wedge-shaped silhouette but with an elongated glasshouse.

The Raging Bull brand last year confirmed its first battery-electric vehicle will be a high-riding 2+2 grand tourer and it’s clear from this rather cryptic preview that’s what it intends to present to the world.

No, Lamborghini’s fourth model line clearly won’t be a five-door SUV like the Urus, nor a two-door super-coupe like the Huracan and Aventador, which are about to be replaced by an all-new hybrid supercar and the hybrid V12-powered Revuelto hypercar respectively.

Instead, we expect the inaugural Lambo EV to stand a similar height off the ground as the all-terrain Huracan Sterrato supercar, but to offer seating for four under a higher roofline and within a more occupant-friendly glasshouse.

The teaser doesn’t show whether or not the EV will feature four doors, but the previously cited ‘2+2’ phrasing suggests it’ll stick with two and offer at least token rear seats, as per the majority of other high-end grand tourers like the Aston Martin DB12, Ferrari 812 and Bentley Continental GT.

The trumpcard here, however, is the fact the battery-powered Lambo doesn’t need to contend with the pesky packaging constraints of an internal combustion engine and its associated hardware, so we wouldn’t be surprised if the finished product arrives with more useable rear seats than the average 2+2.

Lamborghini is yet to confirm any other details of first EV, which isn’t due for production until 2028, but chances are it will be underpinned by the same SSP architecture as the upcoming flagship Audi, Porsche and Bentley EVs, all of which are due for release from mid-decade.

Given it will wear the Raging Bull logo, the Lambo will almost certainly outstrip its cousins in terms of firepower and performance, with a maximum output of around 1000kW very much on the cards from a tri-motor or even quad-motor electric powertrain.

“Something new and truly thrilling is about to be unveiled,” Lamborghini said in the teaser caption.

“August 18th. ?Save the date.”

August 18 in the US correlates to the 19th in Australia, meaning the first Lamborghini EV prototype will be shown in full early this Saturday morning.
