Lamborghini Urus to patrol Italian highways

As well as chasing down speeding drivers, the super SUV will also transport life-saving organs

Lamborghini has reinforced its 20-year partnership with police in its home country by handing over its sixth vehicle – a 2023 Lamborghini Urus Performante – to the Italian State Police at an event in Rome.

Set to do duty for the Italian Highway Police in 2024, the special Lamborghini Urus will enter operational duties alongside the service’s existing Huracan LP610-4 and will be employed for special duties like providing urgent medical transport of organs and blood plasma.

Prepared for the role by engineers and technicians at the Sant’Agata Bolognese factory, the special Urus combines the classic blue and white livery of the Italian State Police with a subtle red, white and green band of colour that matches the Italian flag and stretches from the front fender to part-way along the Lambo SUV’s flanks.

The tricolour theme is also replicated on the side sills and seat belts, while a light bar with 360-degree blue LED lights has been installed on the roof, along with a deafening two-tone siren.

Inside, there’s an armoured weapons box, flip-down message display and a stowage bin for a defibrillator and first-aid kit.

There’s even an on-board medical-grade fridge to store the organs while enroute, comprising a display and data-logging tech that constantly monitors the temperature of its contents.

The police-spec Urus Performante is believed to be unchanged under the bonnet, meaning it delivers monster power and torque from a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 producing 490kW and 850Nm.

Even with a 2150kg kerb weight, Lamborghini says its fastest ever Urus is capable of hitting 100km/h in just 3.3 seconds on its way to a 306km/h top speed, ensuring that only supercar drivers will be able to outrun it on the highway.

There’s no word on how long the Italian police force will have the use of the high-profile Urus, but the existing Huracan LP610-4 has been in active service for more than eight years.

It’s not just the Italian cops who love a fast Lamborghini. Dubai police have for many years employed multiple supercars in its fleet of police interceptors, including a pursuit-ready Aventador.
