Land Rover Discovery farewells V8

Land Rover’s Discovery off-roader not only gets a new look for 2014, but also a new petrol V6 engine.
The 250kW/450Nm 3.0-litre supercharged Jaguar V6, which has been available to order for the new Range Rover since the beginning of this year, replaces the previous supercharged direct-injection 5.0-litre V8.
Driving through a ZF eight-speed auto transmission (the V8 had a six-speed auto), the V6 sacrifices virtually no performance compared with the V8, yet makes worthwhile efficiency gains.
Zero to 100km/h acceleration now takes 8.1 seconds compared to 7.9 seconds for the V8, while the CO2 output drops from 328g/km to 282g/km. Land Rover didn’t provide a fuel consumption figure for the new V6-powered Disco, but it is expected to be an improvement over the 14.1L/100km averaged by the V8 version.
The diesel engine line-up remains as before: TDV6 and SDV6 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6s, producing 155kW and 183kW respectively, return the same fuel consumption (8.8L/100km) and emissions (230g/km) figures.
Significantly, the petrol V6, which comes in SE and HSE form, will be priced equivalent to the SDV6 turbo-diesel variants.
You’ll be able to pick the new Discovery via its refreshed front end complete with new grille, bumper and headlights, and LED daytime running lights. There are also new alloy wheels and revised badging that sees the Land Rover badge replaced by a Discovery badge. Engine variants will be identified by SCV6, SDV6 and TDV6 badges behind the front wheel arches. At the back, the “4” badge is removed, leaving just the word “Discovery.”
An optional Black Design Pack with different detailing and a choice of 19 or 20-inch black alloy wheels is available.
Inside, the latest Discovery gets Land Rover’s Wade Sensing off-road technology, Blind Spot Monitoring, Closing Vehicle Sensing, Reverse Traffic Detection and T-junction Cameras.
Two optional Meridian sound systems bring the Discovery into line with the current Range Rover: Buyers can specify an 11-speaker, 380-Watt system, or a premium Meridian Surround system with 17 speakers and 825 Watts.
2014 Discovery models can be ordered now, with deliveries set to commence in March 2014.
