The rise of diesel-fuelled cars and SUVs has exacerbated a costly problem in the car industry -- mis-fuelling. Accidently filling a diesel vehicle with petrol has been an escalating problem in recent years, so Land Rover is doing something about it.
First launched in the 2007 Range Rover Vogue TDV8, the Land Rover system can detect if a petrol pump nozzle is inserted into a diesel tank. Should a sensor detect the petrol pump nozzle in the diesel tank filler, it triggers a shutter to block the flow of petrol to the tank.
For all 2010 model year Range Rover Sport and Discovery diesel models, Land Rover has announced it will fit this system as standard. The new models are due to go on sale in the final quarter of this year.
According to Land Rover Australian general manger, Roger Jory, mis-fuelling has been on the rise and the repairs are both costly and difficult.
"Mis-fuelling is an expensive and complex problem to fix, Land Rover was the first manufacturer to address this increasingly common issue, and is now incorporating this preventative technology into its new generation of vehicles," says Jory.
