LDV chose the Shanghai Auto Show to unveil its all-new D90 seven-seat 4x4 wagon which hits Australian showrooms in October.
The D90 was first shown as a concept vehicle at the 2016 Shanghai motor show, so LDV has impressively moved to full production in just over 12 months.
Toyota Fortuner and Ford Everest loom as rivals for the LDV D90 which has already been tested in tough local conditions.
Initially the D90 will be powered by a 165kW/360Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.
An all-new 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine is set to follow.
“The totally new diesel should be following in around one and half years,” explained LDV CEO Mr Lan Qinsong in Shanghai. Mr Lan added the new engine would comply with Euro 6 emission standards.
A senior LDV executive subsequently revealed the turbo-diesel will be good for torque of 450Nm.
At a later press conference, Mr Lan hinted a hybrid version of D90 could arrive further down the track.
LDV is expecting a five-star safety rating from ANCAP for the D90.
The D90 is based on LDV’s T60 ute so it runs a ladder-frame chassis and bolt-on body with independent suspension.
Inside, is leather seating with electric adjustment up front. The dashboard is dominated by a large central screen and LDV says there will be a number of apps for customised operation including remote unlocking (for example to allow parcel delivery while you are absent).
The middle seat row provides ample leg and head room and a fold-down central arm rest makes life easier when only occupied by two. Row three is best reserved for two children and behind is luggage space on par with rivals.
For the off-roader, LDV’s D90 delivers part-time four-wheel drive with a circular switch on the centre console to select between two and four-wheel drive, high and low ratios. Upscale models score a standard rear differential lock.
No prices were announced at the launch in Shanghai, but according to LDV Australia General Manager, Mr Dinesh Chinnappa, the D90 will significantly undercut major rivals.
The D90 launches locally in October and will be supported by a three-year 100,000km warranty.
