Leapmotor Australia has committed to keep pushing over-the-air (OTA) software updates for its cars’ core functions beyond the initial three-year complimentary connectivity period – though what happens to the rest of the connected features after that is yet to be decided.

Software updates have become as important as tyre pressures for modern EVs. They fix bugs, sharpen driver assistance systems and occasionally unlock new features while the car sits in your driveway.
So it’s a fair question for any new-ish brand: how long will you keep looking after the car once the cheque’s cleared?
According to Leapmotor Australia boss Andrew Hoang, owners currently get a complimentary connectivity package for three years.

Beyond that, the fine print is still being written, but Hoang drew a clear line in the sand on the stuff that matters most.
“We haven’t made a decision on what happens after that time but what we have committed to is the OTAs will continue when it relates to the core functionalities of the car,” he said.
In other words, the safety and functional bits that keep your Leapmotor running properly will keep getting updates. What happens to the rest of the connected features after year three? That’s still TBC.

It’s a sensible stance, and an important one. Every Leapmotor sold in Australia is either a full EV or a range-extender ‘Hybrid EV’, and all lean heavily on software running through the brand’s LEAP OS infotainment system.
The B05, for example, features OTA updates as standard, and Leapmotor says its map-free city navigation will keep improving via over-the-air updates.
Leapmotor has also shown it’s willing to listen. The brand recently axed its keycard entry system after a customer backlash.
The big unanswered question is what owners will pay, if anything, to keep the full suite of connected features once the complimentary period runs out. Leapmotor says a decision is yet to be made.
For now, the commitment to keep core-function updates flowing should give buyers some peace of mind – particularly those planning to hang on to their car well beyond the three-year mark – and it sits alongside existing warranty coverage of six years/150,000km.
