Lexus LS, GS updated

Japanese luxury sedans get updated safety equipment, structural changes, price increases

Lexus has increased the prices of its LS upper-large and GS large sedans by around $400 across the board following the fitment of new safety and convenience features.

LS and GS models now come with rear cross traffic alert, which warns drivers of traffic approaching at 90 degrees when reversing out of car parks, driveways or the like.

Both models also gain the ENFORM system, which allows iOS and Android smartphones to upload information to the car's sat-nav, for instance, and also features a concierge-like assistance function.

The ENFORM program offers several other app-like systems such as weather forecasts and fuel finders and is expected to be expanded to include more functionality in due course.

The LS and GS models now come with dual USB ports and SD card-based navigation system including speed and red light camera alerts and school zone advice, while more rigid glass is claimed to improve overall vehicle stiffness.

In addition, the Mercedes E-Class and BMW 5 Series-rivalling GS sedan has been updated with revised A-pillar, which "increases the overall stiffness of the vehicle" says the company.

The top-shelf Mark Levinson stereo system is now standard on the GS 350 F Sport model, while buyers of GS 250 and 300h F Sport models can option it via an enhancement pack.

Changes unique to larger LS limousine are minimal, including LED interior dome lights for all models.

"These new features and added levels of safety will make the LS and GS sedans even more of a pleasure to own and drive," declared Lexus Australia Chief Executive Sean Hanley.

Sales of the Lexus GS have tumbled in 2014, to just 233 vehicles between January and November, representing a drop of 50 per cent from 467 in 2013. Just six GS models were sold in November. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class, by comparison, found 1472 new Australian homes this year.

The LS is also struggling to attract buyers, with sales down by 60 per cent year on year -- from 70 registrations in 2013 to just 28 this year. Just one Lexus LS was sold in November.
