Lexus updates safety suite

All Lexus models will get auto-braking and new safety suite by 2017

Lexus will roll out a new suite of active safety aids to its full range of vehicles between now and the end of 2017.

Dubbed Lexus Safety System+ (LSS+), the safety technology uses both radar and camera based systems, as well as smart LED headlights. These systems are in addition to conventional passive restraint systems including multi-stage airbags.

The Toyota-owned Japanese premium brand fired the first shot in the safety upgrade late last week with the international launch of the fourth-generation RX.

However, with the new RX crossover not due in Australia until November (2015), LSS+ will debut locally in the updated ES large sedan range, which goes on sale later this month (September).

In the new RX, LSS+ includes pre-collision warning system (PCS), which incorporates a low-speed autonomous braking system. Active cruise control; lane departure warning and lane-keeping assist as well as blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and adaptive headlights with automatic high beam are also standard on all new RX variants.

Lexus Australia boss Sean Hanley says LSS+ will be rolled out locally as standard equipment as existing Lexus models are updated and/or replaced.

On current timelines, that will see full coverage by the end of 2017, he stated.
