Jeep continues to tease its reborn Grand Wagoneer flagship SUV, with a pair of new images confirming the big new vehicle’s prestige pretensions and all-American spirit.
The 2021 Jeep Grand Wagoneer will be the first of three new Jeep SUVs coming from next year and will take on large luxury off-road SUVs such as the Range Rover and Lexus LX.
It will be followed by the standard Wagoneer, which is likely to be pitched as a Nissan Patrol and Toyota LandCruiser rival, and the new-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee, all of which will offer five-seat and seven-seat configurations when they enter production in 2021.
The two new teaser images of the Jeep Grand Wagoneer posted on Instagram overnight were accompanied by various hashtags including #JeepGrandWagoneer, #Authentic and #Adventure.
They show the engine starter button encased in a fancy metallic bezel and surrounded by high-quality leather-like material with contrasting stitching, highlighting its role as Jeep’s new premium flagship SUV.
The second photo shows the end of the ‘Wagoneer’ badge along with an American flag, indicating Jeep aims to build on the global desire for iconic all-American products like the Chevrolet Corvette and Ford Bronco.
Given the new bush-bashing behemoth is based on the same rugged ladder platform architecture as the latest DT-series RAM 1500 pick-up, it should be a bona-fide off-roader – albeit one with power-adjustable, heated, cooled and massaging leather seats.
However, unlike the RAM 1500, the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are expected to be a global models produced in both left- and right-hand drive ex-factory like all other Jeep models, and therefore they're almost certain to be sold in Australia where SUVs account for half of all new vehicle sales.
Available in five- and seven-seat configurations, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer is expected to make its global premiere within weeks.
Jeep parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles previously confirmed in its most recent financial report that production for the giant Jeep will commence in the second quarter of 2021.
Along with the next-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are more than likely to be offered with V8 engines in SRT and perhaps even supercharged Trackhawk forms.
Product strategy documents leaked in July also confirmed Jeep is plotting more efficient plug-in hybrid versions of the Grand Cherokee and Grand Wagoneer, so it remains to be seen whether diesel power will be offered.
So far this year, Jeep sales in Australia are down by almost 16 per cent, which is less than the overall market dip of around 20 per cent. The Grand Cherokee is Jeep Australia's best-selling model, followed by the Wrangler.
