Porsche's new Macan crossover is set to rocket to best-selling status for the brand in Australia. Due to go on sale locally in June, Porsche Cars Australia (PCA) says it is already holding a substantial order bank for the car and that the buyers it is attracting are, in the main, new to the brand. Speaking at this week's launch of the all-new 911 Turbo and Turbo S at Phillip Island, PCA Director Public Relations, Paul Ellis, said the company was already holding in excess of 200 orders for the midsized softroader.
He stated PCA was gunning for up to 10 per cent of the premium "compact" SUV segment with Macan. This equates to between 1100-1500 units per annum depending on how you segment the current model offerings.
Last year the top selling local Porsche was the Cayenne SUV. PCA sold 1120 Cayennes in 2013 – this accounted for around 60 per cent of the brand's total sales Down Under.
Ellis stated the mid-grade 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol $87,200 Macan S had so far attracted the lion's share of pre-orders.
"This is really interesting and encouraging because if you look at Cayenne, the diesel seems to be the most popular model there. So what that's saying is because people are picking the petrol engine in the Macan, they perceive that – and fairly so – is [the] sportiest engine that you can get at an affordable price for a sporty compact SUV.
"So they're marrying the right engine with the right chassis... [And] That's telling us a lot about the buyer profile. These are people that really want a sporty car and want a sporty drive to go with it," Ellis commented.
According to Ellis, 60 per cent of the first tranche of Macan customers are "brand new to Porsche".
"Around 60% – that's just our anecdotal evidence so far with the deposits we're holding. A lot of those people are coming out of other German brands, but also they're 'aspirational' customers – so they might have come out of [for instance] high-end non-European brands," he stated.
