Maserati Levante SUV takes shape

Patent design sketches of Italian sports car brand's first SUV emerge

The look of Maserati's new Levante SUV has come into focus after what are claimed to be drawings from the vehicle's patent filing were leaked by US outlet AutoGuide.

Revealing a long bonnet that is a trademark of most Maseratis, the Levante SUV also appears to gain the unmistakable triple fender vents behind the front wheels.

The overall shape is sleek and sporty, with a roofline that slopes gently rearwards, and brake lights inspired by the passenger car vehicles, such as the Ghibli and Gran Turismo.

Although it's a more conservative design than the Maserati Kubang SUV concept that premiered at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show, the patent drawings suggest the new model will still be a head-turner on the street.

Expected to be roughly the same size as a Porsche Cayenne – but pitched as a more exotic (read: expensive) offering – the Maserati Levante will be built in northern Italy at the company's Mirafiori plant.

It will be based on a modified version of the Quattroporte platform and will be pitched at well-heeled motorists who want luxury and performance – so pricing is anticipated to comfortably exceed $200,000 when the model arrives here, likely in around 18 months.

There has been chatter suggesting the Levante will make its global premiere at the 2016 Detroit motor show in January, but a Geneva unveiling in March next year is also possible.

Engine choices will include V6 and V8 turbo-petrol engines, supplied by Ferrari, adding a point of difference on top of its Italian origin. Diesel engines are also likely.

Currently neither Lamborghini nor Ferrari offers an SUV, although Lamborghini is expected to confirm its Urus in due course.

It's no surprise that Maserati has jumped onto the SUV bandwagon. Porsche has witnessed huge increases in global sales and profitability as a result of adding high-riding wagons to their portfolios.
