Maserati: No plans for Porsche Macan rival
Maserati has ruled a small crossover because it would clash with similar-sized SUVs from Jeep and Alfa RomeoMaserati’s boss, Harald Wester, has declared he has no plans to make a direct rival for the Porsche Macan.
Speaking to British car magazine Autocar, Wester confirmed the Italian car company would instead focus on the launch of the big Levante SUV that will make its world premiere at the 2016 Detroit motor show next January.
According to Wester, the Levante -- which is due on sale globally next year -- is big enough size-wise not to compete with Jaguar's upcoming SUV model and, presumably, luxurious enough not to compete with Jeep's SUV line-up.
In an interview with Autocar, Wester said: “In this business, you should never say 'no' in a dogmatic way, but my personal opinion is that Maserati wouldn’t want to go below the Levante in size.”
Going on to explain his position and reasons for not creating a small SUV, Wester said: “We are an extremely complex multi-brand group and to have everyone doing a little bit of everything is not the right way.”
Wester said the Levante will be key to Maserati reaching its ambitious sales targets of 75,000 units by 2018.
