Mazda is fronting up yet again at the annual Celebrity Challenge to be conducted in concert with the 2014 Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix.
The all-out celebrity battle at the AGP is notorious for the spectacle of often rookie drivers swapping paint on the racetrack, with entertaining results.
This year’s challenge has attracted a field of 20 well-known faces, who will all be driving new Mazda3s in a no punches pulled race to the finish line.
Training is currently under way at Melbourne’s Sandown racetrack, with former V8 Supercar champ Mark Skaife appointed to keep a watchful eye over the drivers, who hail from all walks of life. According to Skaife, the differing level of skill among the drivers promises the 2014 event will be as entertaining as ever.
“The drivers are still at the early stages of learning the key competencies of becoming a race car driver. They are all applying themselves well and the next two days should start showing us who the top contenders will be,” Skaife said.
The 20-strong field includes a mixed bag of TV personalities, celebrity chefs and sporting identities including champion cyclist Robbie McEwen and snowboarder Alex “Chumpy” Pullin, who competed at this year’s Sochi Olympic Winter Games.
The line-up also includes celebrity chef Adam D’Sylva, former Socceroo Brett Emerton, British actor Charley Boorman, TV news reporter Clint Stanaway, comedian Dave Thornton, TV presenter Lauren Phillips, freestyle skier Lydia Lassila, Today Network’s Maz Compton, musician Megan Washington, ex-AFL player Nathan Brown, beauty pageant titleholder Rachael Finch, singer Rob Mills, radio and TV personality Sam Mac, beauty queen Scherri-Lee Biggs, “The Bachelor” star Tim Robards, Nova 100's Tommy Little and snowboarder Torah Bright.
The celebrities take to the circuit on Thursday March 13 for practice sessions and qualify on Friday for two five-lap races: one on Saturday and another on Sunday March 16.
