Mazda CX-5 updated for 2020

Minor price increase offsets better equipment, improved noise suppression and enhanced off-road ability

The strong-selling Mazda CX-5 has been refined for 2020, now offering an electronic locking facility for the rear differentional on all-wheel drive models.

Mazda markets the diff lock as ‘Off-Road Traction Assist’. The lock can be activated with the press of a button. It’s the key improvement among a host of refinements announced this month for the popular SUV, which will have to soldier on largely unchanged for a few years yet.

Autonomous emergency braking (‘Smart City Brake Support’) now features night-time pedestrian detection for all models in the range.

At entry level, the Mazda CX-5 Maxx is now equipped with a larger, eight-inch infotainment display.

All automatic models other than the base-grade CX-5 Maxx gain shift paddles for sequential shifting without taking hands off the wheel. Vehicles powered by the 2.5-litre (‘SKYACTIV-G’) naturally-aspirated petrol engine now reveal when the cylinder deactivation function is operating through the MZD Connect infotainment display.

Vehicles powered by the turbocharged 2.5-litre petrol engine are quieter again, Mazda reports, with a larger capacity shell for the silencer, “exhaust tail sound suppressed” and the spare tyre pan in the boot now more rigid.

Changes across the range include a new material for the headlining and, for petrol variants, a new ‘steering vibration countermeasure’ – to improve suppression of noise and vibration. Polymetal Grey metallic is a new colour joining the pallete and badging has been revised in a new style for all CX-5 variants. A new key fob design is also introduced to the range.

Mazda offers the CX-5 with a five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty and roadside assistance for the term of the warranty. The Mazda CX-5 Maxx rises in price by $100; other variants in the range are now $200 more expensive.
