The world has got its first unofficial glimpse of the inbound 2022 Mazda CX-60 courtesy of a spy video uploaded to YouTube in Japan.
In the clip shared by CSK Review Channel, two Mazda CX-60s can be seen flashing past a stationary camera behind a rolling camera car, presumably filming for an upcoming commercial.
In terms of styling, the Mazda CX-60 looks almost exactly how you might expect: bigger as well as a bit softer and gentler in its key contours and features than the CX-5 it will sit above, just like the CX-30 is and does to the CX-3.
The all-new SUV’s front-end still definitively follows Mazda’s ‘Kodo’ design language, however, the grille is decidedly taller and wider than that of the facelifted Mazda CX-5, a factor that’s emphasised by the CX-9-style cheeks in front of the wheel-arches.
While it’s hard to ascertain exact dimensions from a drive-by still shot, the bonnet looks both higher and longer than the CX-5’s; a necessary requirement for the new inline six-cylinder engines destined for Mazda’s next-generation Large Product Group models.
The longer bonnet leads to a more cab-back silhouette which in turn acts as a subtle pointer towards the new rear- and all-wheel drive platform.
Going by the body-coloured wing mirrors, wheel-arches and chrome exterior trim (grille, headlights, wings and window surrounds), two-tone large-diameter alloy wheels and cream leather seat trim, we expect the white vehicle shown in the clip to be a flagship ‘Akera’ (or equivalent) variant.
By contrast, the red example in the back of shot is clearly shown wearing a series of blacked-out exterior features – grille, wheels, mirrors, window lines – consistent with the familiar GT SP trim level, not to mention the black interior.
Time will ultimately tell which CX-60 trim levels and variants make it to Australian showrooms, as well as which other new Mazda ‘0’ models get given the greenlight for a local introduction.
Until then, however, the Mazda CX-60 has been locked in for release Down Under in the second half of 2022.
