Mazda has released the first teaser image of its incoming 2023 Mazda CX-90, confirming the luxury three-row SUV will be launched in Australia as the second model – after the CX-60 – based on its new ‘large platform’ with six-cylinder engines under the bonnet.
The Japanese car-maker has confirmed the Mazda CX-90 will be unveiled in January 2023 and that it “represents the company’s newest flagship vehicle, with wider, longer and more aggressive proportions than any current Mazda”.
Other than that, Mazda has simply confirmed that the CX-90 will continue with the brand’s Kodo design philosophy – described as “bold, dynamic” – and will carry an all-new premium paint colour option known as Artisan Red.
The teaser image shows the front fender of the CX-90, which clearly features a strake with an ‘inline 6’ badge.
As per the CX-60, which is due Down Under in the first half of next year, the CX-90 will be offered with a variety of six-cylinder powertrain options, including 3.3-litre inline-six turbocharged petrol and diesel engines with mild-hybrid assistance.
A four-cylinder plug-in hybrid will also be in the mix.
The Australian-market line-up is still to be confirmed.
Built on Mazda’s new ‘Large Product Group’ rear/all-wheel drive platform – which also underpins the CX-60 and the incoming CX-70 and CX-80 SUVs – the CX-90 will not only be the largest Mazda production car ever but will come packed with technology, luxury features and high-quality materials that set it apart.
The Mazda CX-9 will continue for the time being, but its long-term future is unclear.
