Mazda oils up CX-7

At last, a diesel for Mazda's CX-7, plus a vastly reduced-price for normally aspirated, front-drive entry model

Mazda yesterday launched its new 2010 model CX-7 in Australia, broadening its engine range and significantly dropping the price of its entry model for the 2010 model year to just $33,990.

And, for the first time, the CX-7 will be available with a diesel engine – essentially the same 2.2-litre engine used in the diesel Mazda6 but with a revised power output down from 136kW to 127kW.

A new 120kW normally aspirated petrol engine, also a revision of the 2.5-litre Mazda6 powerplant (down from 125kW/226Nm to 120kW/205Nm), will take up duty in the entry CX-7 Classic model.

This means the new CX-7 Classic with five-speed Activematic automatic transmission will be priced at $33,990, representing a drop of nearly $8000 from the manufacturer's list price for the (turbocharged, four-wheel drive) outgoing model.

The adoption of a two wheel drive model will give Mazda the teeth to tackle other car-makers taking similar directions (Ford Territory, Holden Captiva, Toyota Kluger) with their SUVs.

For those keen to get into a CX-7 but couldn't justify the price, the good news continues: both the Classic Sports and Luxury Sports models, which continue to use the turbocharged 175kW 2.3-litre petrol engine and six-speed Activematic transmission, drop their prices by $2975 and $1940 respectively.

The new, six-speed manual-only CX-7 diesel, which is fitted out similarly to the petrol Classic Sports but adds such items as satellite navigation, reversing camera, Bluetooth and Bose sound system, is priced to sit below the Luxury Sports.

The new 2010 Mazda CX-7 is on sale now and check back soon for our first drive of the updated crossover vehicle.

2010 Mazda CX-7 Manufacturer's List Prices (not including statutory and delivery charges):

- Classic (5-sp Activematic) $33,990
- Classic Sports (6-sp Activematic) $38,990 (down $2,975)
- Luxury Sports (6-sp Activematic) $45,990 (down $1,940)
- Diesel Sports (6-sp Manual) $43,640
