Mazda has expanded its recall program to replace defective Takata airbags supplied with cars sold new in Australia.
The latest models affected are the Mazda6 (GH), Mazda CX-7 (ER) and Mazda CX-9 (TB). According to Mazda nearly 20,000 units of the Mazda6, over 14,000 units of CX-7 and nearly 21,500 units of CX-9 are subject to the recall notice.
As with other Takata airbags, the passenger-side units fitted to the Mazdas allow moisture to penetrate in humid conditions. This may result in corrosion of the inflator housing and metal fragments consequently exploding outwards, with potentially fatal consequences.
Mazda Australia will contact owners of the subject vehicles by mail. Owners are advised to arrange a time with an authorised Mazda dealer to replace the passenger-side airbag inflator.
