Mazda's third generation Mazda3 will undergo a trial by ordeal for its first major promotional event in Australia.
Just a month after its local media launch 20 examples of the new car will form a one-make field at Melbourne's Albert Park race track for the Celebrity Challenge that precedes the F1 race.
Mazda issued a press release today announcing its support for an encore of the 2013 event. The importer backed the Celebrity Challenge this year by entering a field comprising the newly-released Mazda6 – with the mid-size sedans incurring heaps of panel damage in the process. For 2014 each driver will be behind the wheel of the Mazda3, powered by the 2.5-litre SKYACTIV-G petrol engine, coupled to the six-speed automatic transmission. Output of 138kW and 250Nm should provide enough rope for less experienced drivers to come unstuck. Both sedans and hatches will make up the field.
"We're delighted to welcome Mazda back on board for the 2014 Mazda3 Celebrity Challenge. The race adds so much excitement and glamour to an already action packed weekend of racing," the press release quoted Andrew Westacott, CEO of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation.
"I participated in the Celebrity Challenge at the 2011 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix and it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life," said media personality and Mazda ambassador, Lauren Phillips, who is on board as the first official competitor for the race.
"Since then I have been lucky enough to become a Mazda3 ambassador and, like most Australians, have fallen in love with the car. I can't wait to get behind the wheel of the All-New Mazda3 and just know that the new celebrity drivers are in for a treat."
The event will be held on March 16, 2014.
