Since it was first launched in 2002, the Mazda6 has reached a cumulative global production figure of two million units, marking the second fastest time the Japanese manufacturer has achieved the milestone after it recently did the same with the Mazda3.
Mazda achieved the impressive tally at the end of last month (August), taking eight years and six months from the beginning of production to reach the impressive figure. Mazda6 global production volume during the January-August 2010 period was approximately 164,000 units, almost a 50 per cent increase over same period the previous year.
Locally, Mazda6 sedan and hatch models have been especially popular with in excess of 90,000 examples sold here since launch. While globally, the sporty family car has also received 130 motoring prizes since, including a top-place each year since the inception of the Carsales People’s Choice Awards for 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009, and previously in our Car of the Year award program (medium category) for 2003, 2004, and 2005.
"The Mazda6 is one of the core models which helped establish Mazda’s brand image globally," said Mazda’s senior managing executive officer in charge of R&D and Program Management, Seita Kanai.
"I was the first generation model’s development program manager, and I still have a special fondness for this terrific car. I’m grateful to the two million-plus customers around the world who have purchased a Mazda6. I would like to say thank you to each and every customer."
