A shrinking medium car segment and slowing sales of the company's Mazda6 have spurred Mazda to re-jig the mid-size range for the new model year.
The company has ditched the Mazda6 Limited and Luxury variants, leaving just Touring, Sports, Luxury Sports and Diesel offerings in the range. Former Classic grade variants in the range have been brought up to the same level of trim as the Touring models and renamed accordingly. Only the Classic wagon has been dropped altogether, since the Mazda6 range featured a Touring variant prior to the introduction of the upgraded range for the new model year.
Mazda claims that the Touring sedan and hatch provide the buyer with more equipment at a lower price than the Classic variants they replace — $300 less, despite the inclusion of front/rear parking sensors, leather seat trim and electrically-adjustable front seats with memory facility for the driver's.
In order to align with the sedan and hatch variants, the Touring wagon has been reduced in price by $3370. The Diesel wagon is also upgraded, with the same additional features specified for the Touring sedan and hatch. Following the discontinuation of the Limited variants, all Mazda6 models are now trimmed in leather and equipped with front and rear parking sensors as standard.
The Sports and Luxury Sports grades (including the Diesel models trimmed to the same specification) gain satellite navigation with a seven-inch colour screen as standard. This represents $2800 of extra value, as the satnav was previously an option.
For the year to date, the Mazda6 has sold 3754 units in Australia, according to VFACTS. That figure is 30 per cent down from the 5360 sold for the same period last year. Much of that shortfall is a result of the Japanese tsunami in March, which has also affected the VFACTS medium car segment generally, with sales down 8.3 per cent. In percentage terms, only Subaru's Liberty has been affected worse by the disaster of the Mazda's direct Japanese competitors, and the 6 is the mainstream passenger vehicle in the Mazda range hardest hit.
