Mazda6 wagon revealed in full

Five-door model to be unveiled to the public in Paris with SKYACTIV diesel under the bonnet

Mazda has today issued new photos of the Mazda6 wagon, which will make its global debut at the Paris motor show later this month.

The five-door model had appeared in a picture released early last month to mark the commencement of Mazda6 production at the company's Hofu Plant No. 2 in Japan. That image showed the new wagon in side profile, but the new pics leave nothing to the imagination – including a view of the car's rear end.

Mazda has lined up the wagon to appear in Paris alongside the sedan, which made its first public showing at the Moscow motor show last week. Both the new sedan and wagon will take the stage in Paris with diesel powerplants, but Mazda plans to offer the two body styles in Europe with a further choice of 2.0-litre or 2.-5-litre SKYACTIV-G petrol engines. Both the petrol units (and the diesel) are four-cylinder engines and all are direct-injected.

As of yet there's no word from Mazda Australia whether the diesel powertrain will make it here or which petrol engine will be on offer, but given the current model already offers a diesel option that seems a foregone conclusion. All that really remains to be answered is which state of tune will make it to Australia – the high-output engine or the standard output version. Our money's on the former, provided it can cope with the local fuel quality. And the current car displaces 2.5 litres in petrol form, so the larger of the SKYACTIV-G engines appears the better prospect for the local market.

The wagon is naturally a variation on the KODO styling theme embodied in last year's Takeri concept exhibited at the Tokyo motor show. Mazda is rumoured to be developing a CLS-style low-roof sedan to join the model range at some point in the future, providing some solace for those who will miss the current model liftback set to be discontinued following the introduction of the new car.

Mazda will launch the new '6' in Australia during the first quarter of next year.
