McLaren has confirmed its next supercar will be based on an all-new platform and powered by a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
The British manufacturer says a fully electric model is on the radar, but won’t be a reality for the brand any time soon as the battery technology is “too heavy and too expensive”.
According to Car and Driver, the hypo-hybrid will use an electrically driven front axle to help it launch from zero to 100km/h in less than three seconds – quicker than both the McLaren Senna and P1.
Details are sparse, but reports are the new model will be unveiled in 2020 before first deliveries in early 2021, with other hybrid-powered McLarens to be introduced along the way.
McLaren boss Mike Flewitt has also revealed the brand plans to introduce a hybrid-powered version of each model within three to four years. Those models are also set to offer fully electric driving ranges of around 15-20 miles (24-32km).
The sports car maker will still offer fully-fledged turbocharged V8 models as well as a new hybrid models.
