Mercedes-Benz C-Class prices hiked again

Up to $11,000 added to the asking price of the mid-size luxury sedan line-up

UPDATED 01/09/2023 1:00pm: Mercedes-Benz Australia has confirmed the significant price increases we reported earlier today come in conjunction with a major standard equipment upgrade for the Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan just 18 months after its local launch.

According to a local spokesperson, the German brand analysed the purchasing patterns of customers and grouped commonly ordered functional features into the C-Class’s standard specification accordingly, in a move said to streamline the purchasing process.

“Following the positive feedback to the simplified offering structure for the all-new GLC SUV, we are adopting a simplified offering structure for the C-Class range,” the spokesperson said.

“This simplification aims to eliminate the need for customers to individually select multiple options and improve vehicle availability.”

Now included as standard for the C 200 and C 300 are metallic paint, a head-up display, heated front seats with memory function, a panoramic sliding sunroof and Anthracite wood trim.

Other new features added to the C 200 include 19-inch AMG multi-spoke alloys and heat-insulating dark-tinted glass.

The flagship AMG C 43, meantime, has also been treated to Anthracite wood trim as well as Mercedes’ latest Digital Light Package.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE PUBLISHED 01/09/2023 11:00am: Prices for the 2023 Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan range have been increased by up to $11,000, and the entry-level Mercedes-Benz C 200 now starts from $89,900 plus on-road costs.

The hefty base price increase comes on top of the $12,000 hike for the all-new W206 Mercedes-Benz C 200 sedan – the first model released by Mercedes-Benz Australia under its new fixed-price ‘agency’ sales model – when it was the released locally in February 2022.

Before then, the old C-Class was priced from $66,900, and the latest C 200’s new circa-$90K starting price is significantly higher than chief rivals like the Alfa Romeo Giulia (from $68,450), Audi A4 ($66,300), BMW 3 Series ($80,200), Genesis G70 ($63,000) and Jaguar XE ($80,450) and Volvo S60 ($66,990).

Things aren’t quite so bad for buyers of the mid-range Mercedes-Benz C 300 and top-spec Mercedes-AMG C 43, which have risen by $5500 and $4000 and now start from $95,900 and $138,900 respectively.

Mercedes-Benz is yet to publicly announce or justify the price increases, but we suspect they have something to do with the ongoing volatility of raw material, shipping and logistical costs facing most manufacturers at the moment.

A 2024 model year spec upgrade, especially for the C 200, is also possible; carsales has contacted Mercedes-Benz Australia for comment and will update this story with the brand’s response.

How much does the 2023 Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan cost?
C 200 – $89,900 (+$11,000)
C 300 – $95,900 (+$5500)
C 43 AMG – $138,900 (+$4000)
