Mercedes-Benz has added plug-in hybrid electric power to one of its best-selling models Down Under, with the new GLA-Class 250 e compact SUV now on sale from just under $80k before on-road costs.
Entering Aussie showrooms this week from $78,000 plus on-roads, that sees the new GLA 250 e slot between the petrol-powered base GLA 200 (from $63,600) and GLA 250 4MATIC (from $80,500).
Powering the new PHEV is a the same 120kW 1.3-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine as the lesser GLA 200 but adds the brand’s ‘EQ technology’ in the form of an 11.5kWh lithium-ion battery and small electric motor to boost combined outputs to a healthy 160kW/450Nm.

It’s also said to offer up to 65km electric-only driving range (WLTP), however, the manufacturer is yet to reveal claimed fuel consumption figures.
If you want faster 11kW AC charging, up from the standard 3.5kW, you’ll also have to pay an extra $800.
Meanwhile, standard equipment includes 18-inch alloy wheels, metallic paint, panoramic sunroof, keyless entry and start, ambient interior lighting, tinted windows, and heated front seats with memory function.
Inside, you’ll find Artico leather-appointed upholstery, wireless phone charging, and dual-zone climate control, along with driver aids such as blind spot monitoring, active lane keep assist, and a parking package with a 360-degree camera.

Two option packages are offered, adding to the purchase price.
The AMG Line Package ($2500) adds sports seats, AMG floor mats, a Nappa leather clad steering wheel with galvanised shift paddles, sports brakes, and lowered comfort suspension. It also adds the faster 11kW AC charging.
Elsewhere, the Plus Package ($3847) – which can only be had alongside the AMG Line Package – brings multibeam LED lighting, a premium Burmester surround sound system, head-up display, augmented reality navigation, illuminated door sills and Driving Assistance Package.
