Mercedes-Benz recalls 204-series C-Class

Airbags may fail to deploy, says prestige importer

Nearly 8000 C-Class vehicles sold by Mercedes-Benz in Australia are the subject of a recall for a restraint system control unit that is susceptible to corrosion.

According to the company's recall notice, issued through the ACCC's website, the corrosion may lead to a malfunction of the control unit, which triggers airbags when the system detects a collision with another vehicle or object. Should the control unit cease to operate correctly, an airbag (SRS) warning light in the dash will illuminate.

Mercedes-Benz Australia also advises that the corroded control unit may actually trigger safety devices without warning. The vehicles subject to the recall were sold in Australia between March 1, 2006 and December 31, 2008.

Letters will be sent to the 7833 owners of the subject vehicles, in order to have their vehicle checked by an authorised Mercedes-Benz dealer.
