Mercedes-Benz to add particulate filter to petrols
German car-maker says it will add particulate filters to petrol engines to cut emissionsMercedes-Benz has announced it is developing particulate filters for petrol engines.
Petrol or gasoline engines already produce significantly less particulate matter compared to diesels but, despite this, the German car-maker says it will roll out the filters to cut lower emissions even further.
Past scientific research has found that there are no safe limits for particulates, with even small amounts proving harmful to health. Particulate emissions have been linked with various chronic health problems that include cancer.
Mercedes claims that its new filters will be added along with new piezo injectors following a two-year experiment using a prototype Mercedes-Benz S 500.
Claiming to be the first car-maker to ever fit a particulate filter to a production petrol engine, Mercedes says other petrol versions of the S-Class will follow the S 500 with the emission-reducing technology.
Set to be introduced on the next facelift of the luxurious limousine, the first petrol S-Class models with the particulate filters will go on sale early 2017.
After that Mercedes says it will gradually introduce the filter technology on other models and other petrol engines.
As well as the improvements to its petrol engines, the German car-maker says it will continue to improve emissions of its diesel line-up.
Mercedes says optimisation of turbos, new fuel-injection and better intercooling, plus the use of new materials to improve engine durability, will help it increase the range of temperatures within which its exhaust-gas recirculation system operates.
Mercedes-Benz, like many other car-makers, has come under intense criticism for using emission technology that's inactive for a large portion of driving in real-world conditions.
The car-maker says a new exhaust and catalyst made of new materials will also soon be introduced.
Existing owners of the current A-, B-, CLA- and GLA-Class models, plus the V-Class van will all soon be offered with voluntary software updates that are also thought to improve emissions.
The V-Class is the first vehicle to be offered with the new software from this June, the car-maker has announced.
