UPDATED, July 1 2025: MG Australia has updated its new vehicle warranty terms, with all newly-registered MG models from July 1, 2025 only offered the brand's generous 10-year/250,000km warranty when servicing is completed at an authorised MG dealership.
The conditional warranty is the same set-up as Mitsubishi and Nissan.
Meanwhile, commercial customers will be covered by a seven-year/160,000km but things get a bit more complicated when it comes to the inbound MG U9 dual-cab ute.
Non-commercial buyers of the U9 will be covered by a seven-year/200,000km (when serviced with MG), while commercial-use vehicles will be covered with a five-year/160,000km warranty (regardless of where the vehicle is serviced).
The updated warranty terms don't apply to vehicles sold with MG's original 10-year warranty introduced last August and detailed below.
ORIGINAL, August 1 2024: MG Motor Australia has announced a new 10-year/250,000km warranty, eclipsing Mitsubishi to become the provider of Australia’s most generous new-vehicle factory warranty.
In what appears to be a pre-emptive strike to bolster its aftersales offer before the arrival of at least a dozen other Chinese brands in Australia by the end of 2025, MG’s new market-leading 10-year warranty is permanent (not promotional) and applies across its entire model range, including EVs.
While Mitsubishi also offers 10 years of aftersales warranty coverage, it’s capped at 200,000km and is broken down into two halves: a standard five-year/100,000km warranty as per most of its competitors, plus a further five-year/100,000km warranty if scheduled servicing is performed by an official Mitsubishi dealer as part of the Japanese brand’s 10-year capped price service program.
Honda recently implemented a similar arrangement, extending its previous five-year/unlimited-kilometre and seven-year promotional warranties out to eight years, with the coverage extended at the time of servicing each year until the vehicle reaches a total of eight years.
Effective today (August 1), MG’s new 10-year warranty is subject to the same terms and conditions as the previous seven-year arrangement-- all vehicles provided they are serviced on time, using genuine/authorised parts.
Unlike some of its rivals, MG says its new warranty isn’t applicable to already-purchased vehicles, only those purchased and registered as of this month.
The brand is also the first mainstream auto brand to offer an unconditional 10-year warranty on an electric vehicle – the previous best being an eight-year battery warranty.
Hyundai and BYD offer eight-year/160,000km battery warranties for their electric and hybrid vehicle batteries, Mitsubishi offers a five-year/100,000km EV and PHEV battery warranty and Toyota will extend its hybrid battery warranty from five to 10 years – if annual hybrid health check inspections are completed.
Among the luxury brands, Lexus offers an industry-leading 10-year warranty for its EV batteries.
MG previously offered a seven-year/unlimited-km warranty – like Kia, GWM-Haval, Skoda, Chery and SsangYong, while most other auto brands offer five-year/unlimited-km aftersales support coverage.
The pioneering Chinese brand says its new warranty program has been in the works for a while and aims to add “more value, appeal and peace of mind” for buyers of its already sharply-priced products.
“If you’re looking for value and peace of mind from a new car purchase, the length and quality of the factory warranty should be as important as the horsepower,” said MG Australia chief commercial officer Giles Belcher.
“We are listening to our customers. We do think a longer warranty is more attractive, and it also reiterates trust in our cars, particularly our EV range.
“MG’s 10-year warranty delivers unmatched peace of mind and ensures that you are fully supported on every journey.”
